Did you know that the Moon is actually a feminine symbol? Universally it represents the rhythm of time as it embodies our cycle.

If you think about it, the moon takes 29 days to complete its cycle and women’s menstrual cycle is generally 28 days! When a woman goes through her menstrual cycle she goes through the different lunar energies (new moon, first quarter, full moon, third quarter). In ancient times, it was said that the natural rhythm of women was to menstruate under a new moon and ovulate under a full moon.

The cycle and stages are also connected to the different seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter).

New Moon
The menstruation period is during the new moon period and also during winter. It’s said that this is a reflective phase, a phase of silence, introspection and solitude. Our bodies are more sensitive during this time so we’re able to connect in with it and hear the messages it gives us. During this phase, it’s said that you can rely more heavily on your instinct and intuition. This is also a time when a woman naturally recycles energy as she menustrates, so, it’s also a time for rest and recovery. I don’t know about you but I definitely feel the need for more rest when I’m menstruating!

Crescent Moon
Pre-ovulation, the crescent moon and spring is a time for renewal, and this time corresponds to an increase in physical energy. This is also when mental strength reigns and thoughts are clearer. Emotions are more stable and life energy is at its peak. This is probably when you find yourself being more social, going out more and enjoying yourself with friends.

Full Moon
The ovulation phase and summer is full of energy and vitality. It’s actually a fertile phase in all aspects of your life; your work life and personal life. Both self-confidence and self-esteem increase in addition to sex drive.

Waning Moon
In the pre-menstruation phase which is also the waning moon and autumn stage, physical energy starts to decrease. Just like a tree sheds its leaves, we feel the need to let go of anything not benefiting us. Memory and the ability to concentrate decreases and this is why it’s a perfect time to look into our desires, needs and fears and to reflect. This stage is helpful for healing and continuing on the path of personal growth.

Previously, this link between women and mother nature was a part of many cultures and customs. Many rites were performed and stories were told explaining this relationship. In order to teach young women about their bodies and understand themselves, they learnt about the moon. They were told that their menstrual cycles were sacred, not dirty or shameful.

Now, many women don’t necessarily pay a great deal of attention to the changes in emotions and energy they experience during their cycle.

Hopefully understanding the female cycle along with the moon phases helps you better understand yourself, femininity and happiness regardless of your age. Some say that part of your personal development process should include devotedness to reconnecting with the menstrual cycle, its phases, energies and power. When you can become aware of your cycle you can more easily understand and manage life in harmony with your own natural processes.
